I am interested in exploring the potential for multiple meanings within the jewellery I make. Often my material and inspiration comes from the litter I pick up as I walk whether it is at home or when travelling. I am interested in the ethics of value, the environmental issues surrounding mining and refining of gems and metal. The litter of course focuses on the more immediate impact a too often untidy and wasteful humanity is having on the world. There is a certain irony in making this detritus into something desirable.
The act of collecting is also an important part of my practice – I see it as part of the performance – I need to be in a particular mental space to enable me to pick up litter on crowded streets and from gutters. It is usually an introverted action –however, it is an action that is noticed and hopefully those that do will have an odd image and question in their minds about what was actually taking place.
Further interest and inspiration comes from the souvenir industry, the potency of maps, the intricate world of traditional icing and the evocative nature of used children’s toys.
