a bene pacita

Vivien Atkinson

July 29th – August 25 2019

Silver plated liqueur vessels, brass liqueur vessels, stainless steel wire, chrome plated steel chain

The choice of a Latin title for this work comes from a search of a Musical dictionary and if used in a musical score, would indicate that the performer can play how it pleases them. This work is both jewellery and a musical instrument made specifically at the request of Kristen d’Agostino who curated a number of such pieces for the performance of Opera of Objects at two venues in Australia. To watch one of these performances, you can see it here - the necklace is used after minute 45. The brief – to make a necklace that would be ‘self-sounding’. Opera of Objects was created and performed by Eric Griswold, Catherine Millikin, Craig Foltz and Vanessa Tomlinsen. A bene pacita was ‘played’ and worn by Vanessa Tomlinsen. For further information about this fascinating experimental work, Kristen has written a broad description at the following site: https://kristindagostino.com/projects/opera-of-objects-jewellery/
